New Red Cross Appeal for South Asia

The Gibraltar Red Cross branch yesterday launched its latest appeal.

Treasurer Charlie Montegriffo opened an account for the victims of South Asia following Pakistan’s worst earthquake at the weekend where the death toll estimates range from 20,000 to above 30,000.

The United Nations said over 2.5 million people were left homeless by Saturday’s 7.6-magnitude quake, which destroyed entire villages. Doctors have warned of an outbreak of disease unless more relief arrives soon.

The account called South Asia Appeal Fund has been opened at Barclays Bank at 84-90 Main Street. The account number is 1100445.

Mr Montegriffo was again confident that people would give generously for this worthy cause. He also said the Red Cross locally was considering holding a flag day soon in aid of the appeal.
