Pensions, Airport and Eastside Project are top priorities, says Juarez

Mayor of La Linea Juan Carlos Juarez has declared that the Spanish Foreign Ministry (Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores MAE) has agreed with his concerns regarding the need to address any negative environmental impact that may be produced by the Eastside Development project.

Sr Juarez said that the Director General for Europe Jose Pons had said that EU environmental impact directives and exchange of information procedures related to major developments that have cross-border effects will be applied.

Under this directive affected parties even from a neighbouring country will have the opportunity to participate in such process.

Meanwhile Sr Juarez is hopeful that a solution to the Spanish pensions issue will be forthcoming later in the month.

Sr Juarez added that he welcomed and wanted to see Gibraltar progress economically “like any other neighbouring city,” adding that on environmental issues frontiers did not exist in terms of a potentially negative effects to a coastline.

Works, he continued, should temporarily stop until all environmental requirements are completed, and “this is something Sr Pons agrees with.”

Pensions, the airport and the Eastside project in that order are the three priorities of the Tripartite Forum, he added.
