Local man charged after major traffic incident

A young local man will appear in court today in connection with a major traffic incident that left two women seriously injured early last Saturday morning, just hours before the National Day celebrations kicked off.

The man had been driving a car west on Devil’s Tower Road when he appears to have lost control of the vehicle at the Sundial roundabout, crashing into the two women who were sitting on the wall next to the Cepsa garage. The vehicle rolled onto its side during the crash.

Initial reports suggested one of the women, neither of whom have been named, had lost a limb as a result of the accident. But as the Chronicle went to press yesterday evening, doctors were operating and trying to save her severely bruised leg. The other woman suffered a fractured hip.

The Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) named the driver of the vehicle as 21-year old Kyle Olivares, of 4 Oak Tree Lodge. He is charged with failing to provide a breath specimen, assaulting a witness shortly after the accident and dangerous driving.

Mr Olivares was remanded in custody pending his appearance in court this morning.
