Lest We Forget

The Hunt (Type II) class escort destroyer HMS Lamerton similar to HMS Puckeridge. World War 2 veterans visited Gibraltar last week to remember their friends and colleagues who tragically died on HMS Puckeridge during the Second World War.

On 6 September 1943, the Hunt class destroyer HMS Puckeridge was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat about 40 miles east of Europa Point.

She was hit by two torpedoes in the stern which caused her to sink in 8 minutes with the loss of 62 of the crew.

The veterans were Mr Phil Perry and his wife Margaret, Mr Fred Taylor and his son John and Mr Tony Monks and his son Graham. The three veterans came primarily to remember their friends who died on that day but they also visited the Naval Base and met with military personnel currently serving in Gibraltar.
