GSPCA: ‘Looking for homes’

The Gibraltar Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA), and the Cat Welfare Society, will be showing a selection of dogs and cats which are looking for homes this Saturday.

Big wooly dogs, small cuddly ones. Cats with personality and charm. The animals will all be on show outside Safeway this Saturday between 10am and 2pm hoping some kind family will take them home with them.

The Gibraltar Society for the Prevention Cruelty to Animals and Cat Welfare are urgently seeking caring homes for these dogs, cats and kittens which for different reasons, have been abandoned by their owners.

Barbara Dunn, chairperson of the GSPCA, told the Chronicle that the dogs which will be on show are presently living at the Veterinary Clinic at Rosia.

Some have been abandoned in different areas of the Rock. This is an area of concern for the GSPCA, adds Mrs Dunn, who also points out that a number of strays also find their way into Gibraltar via the land frontier.

“On Saturday there will be seven dogs. What we want is for people to get to know
them and to take them on a lead for a walk in the area,” she said.

“These animals need homes. People want puppies all the time but they should take a look at these animals. Many would make lovely pets if they saw them and spent some time with them.”

However, the GSPCA, will not allow any dogs to be taken away on Saturday. Would-be pet owners will have to leave a deposit and later the next week collect the animal and carry out all the paper work.

The GSPCA has highlighted the recent case of a Greyhound left at Europa Point to fend for herself.

In a statement yesterday the Society pointed to some of the other animals currently in their care.

“...there is also the happy brown shaggy dog, a true extrovert, and loves children. He’ll need regular walks and will be a great addition to any family. The beautiful young Golden Retriever is bursting with affection. She will be a wonderful company on your walks.

For the not so energetic, there are two cute little fellows hoping for a new start in life. The little black and white dog will insist on being no.1 in your affections, while the little brown charmer will gaze doe-eyed at you all day long!

The lovely little Maltese Poodle who was recently left at the GSPCA is very miserable in his cage, and is desperately hoping someone will choose him.

The pretty, brown, small and friendly girl dog that was recently found abandoned wont be on show on Saturday. She will be producing her litter any day now, but as soon as the pups are weaned, she will be spayed and looking for a caring family to choose her.”

On the day there will also be a number of cats and kittens of different colours and hues.

“There will be young cats, older cats, intelligent cats, and cats with great personality and style. Please come along! One of these abandoned companion animals may just pull at your heart strings!” added the spokesperson.
