Golden thanks to Hector and Mark Brown

Island Games Triple Gold Medallist - Gibraltarian Michael Sanchez
Michael Sanchez, three times gold medallist at the XI NatWest Island Games, has praised the work of his coach following his recent success in the Shetlands.

In a letter to the Gibraltar Chronicle, Michael the new long-distance champion of the games, has wanted to express his thanks and appreciation to both his coach Hector Romero and team mate and mentor Mark Brown.

Michael Sanchez won his first gold on day one of the games in the 10,000m, breaking the Gibraltar national record set in 1977 in a time of 30:59.87. He was also well within the Commonwealth classification time for which he had already classified for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006.

His two other gold medals were won on the final day of the games, when together with his team mate, athlete Mark Brown, he won both the half-marathon individual and team events.

In his letter he thanks his coach Hector Romero “who has been a constant inspiration”, and his team mate Mark Brown “for pushing him that extra mile”.

Michael is also grateful to the Commanding Officer of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment for enabling him to have time out for the training sessions and his participation in events abroad, the GAAA’s, sponsors Buxton and Co, family, friends and fellow athletes. Michael ended his letter by saying:

“They have all motivated me in achieving this triple gold success for Gibraltar sport.”

Meanwhile Michael continues to train hard for the Commonwealth Games.
