Ship Officer training opportunity

The Government has set up a training scheme whereby two scholarships will be available each year for young persons wishing to gain qualifications as a sea-going Deck or Engineer Officer on merchant vessels.

The course consists of a three-year training package involving theoretical studies at a UK college and practical sea-going experience on sea-going cargo or passenger vessels.

Candidates who successfully complete the course will attain a United Kingdom Maritime and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency as an officer in charge of a watch.

An advertisement inviting applications for this year’s scholarships is being published.

The Government is providing the training in partnership with Aegean Bunkering (Gibraltar) Limited, Peninsula Petroleum Limited, S&P Marine Service Shipping (Gibraltar) Limited and Vemaoil Company Limited.

The Minister for Trade, Industry, Employment and Communications, Joe Holliday, said:

“This is an excellent opportunity for local young people to train as officers on merchant vessels.

The initiative is an example of the commitment of both Government and the Private Sector to train locals for senior positions within the maritime industry.

Government is grateful for the four private sector companies who have agreed to contribute financially to this scheme."
