Junta reprimands PSOE remarks

The Junta de Andalucia yesterday reprimanded its Campo de Gibraltar representative, Rafael España, for using the word “scavenger” to describe Javier Arenas, president of the Partido Popular in Andalucia.

Sr España had used the term when referring to Sr Arena’s appearance at an environmental protest march last weekend.

But Enrique Cervera, spokesman for the Junta, yesterday said certain phrases should not be used in political debate and that this was one of them.

The Junta had made this clear to Sr España, the Europa Press agency reported.

Even so, Sr Cervera also pointed out that this was not the first time the word “scavenger” had been used in political exchanges. Spain’s ex-president José María Aznar used it to describe the socialist Jesús Caldera during a debate about the Yakovlev 42 disaster.
