Sovereignty issue not for Junta, says Zarrias

A senior official from the Junta de Andalucia has declared that the regional government would not participate in any meetings between Spain, the UK and Gibraltar that touched on high-level diplomatic issues such as sovereignty.

Gaspar Zarrías - director general de Administración Local de la Junta de Andalucía
Gaspar Zarrías told Spanish reporters that the Junta’s participation in talks between Spain and Gibraltar would be limited to “technical meetings” that covered issues within its remit, the Spanish news agency Europa Press reported.

“If there is any issue that affects the Junta in any of its areas of competency, we will be present at that meeting, whether it’s the [tri-partite] forum or the working groups that tackle each of the subjects,” he said.

He said the Junta would participate in meetings related to health, education and the environment, for example.

“I think we need to be at those meetings and this is what we have told the government, so that the views of the Junta are present.”
