‘HMS Victory sail’ fragment under auction

A fragment of top sail experts believe to be from HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, is expected to sell for £8,000 to £12, 000, auctioneers said yesterday.

The rectangular piece of canvas measuring 35 x 21cm (13.7 x 8.3in) has been unearthed in East Anglia by Bonhams auctioneers and will form part of a Nelson memorabilia sale in London on July 5.

Bonhams said the sail fragment had a musket shot hole and had been checked by experts at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. It is thought to have been cut from the sail by a souvenir hunter after the 1805 battle.

Bonhams has not named the owner, who lives in East Anglia. A spokeswoman said the fragment had been taken to the firm’s office in Ipswich, Suffolk.
