Government accuses Opposition of “hypocrisy” over beach facilities

Gibraltar Government has said that the statement by the GSLP/Libs on the non-availability of lifeguards and lack of beach facilities before the start of the bathing season is an act of “political hypocrisy, considering their track record when they were in office.”

A Government spokesman said there was no justification for the Opposition to complain about any of the beach facilities currently being offered in the pre-bathing season as none of these facilities were ever offered by them when they were in office.

The Gibraltar Government spokesman said:

“During the bathing season, which starts on Saturday June 11 and finishes on September 12 2005, the Government provides daily beach cleaning, toilet facilities and attendants, lifeguards, shower/changing rooms, first aid facility and tents on our beaches.

In addition, during the winter period, beach cleaning has been carried out throughout the non-bathing season at least once a month.

This is something the Opposition never did when they were in Government, thus the dilapidated state of our beaches in winter during 1988 to 1996.

There have also been beach and toilet facilities at Camp Bay and Little Bay on a daily basis throughout the winter months to ensure improved leisure areas to the community. These facilities were never available when the Opposition were in office.

This year we have gone even further and introduced a full cleaning programme of the beaches during the Easter long weekend and as from Saturday the 31st April 2005, every weekend thereafter. This will continue until the start of the bathing season.

Toilet facilities without attendants, but with supervision, have been open during all weekends since the end of April 2005 and including the Easter long weekend.

Lifeguards and full toilets/shower/changing facilities, with attendants, will be available throughout the bathing season.”
