Anti-Tobacco smuggling operation success for RG Police

* Officers swoop on commercial premises at Eastern Beach

Royal Gibraltar Police have carried out a successful operation against tobacco smuggling in Gibraltar with the arrest of 12 persons, a large quantity of tobacco and 20 flick knives.

The operation was carried out on Monday and included the search of a commercial premises at Eastern Beach. An RGP spokesman said:

“Officers of the Royal Gibraltar Police Community Safety Unit were involved in an anti-tobacco smuggling operation carried out on Monday April 25th 2005, which resulted in the arrest of 12 persons (eight locals and four Spanish), and the subsequent seizure of 46 boxes of tobacco and other materials connected with the unlawful transportation and exportation of tobacco.

Following observations carried out in the area of Eastern Beach, two locals and two Spanish nationals were arrested by British Lines Road as they attempted to unlawfully export two full boxes of tobacco over the frontier fence by the east gate, and which which was at the time conveyed inside a private locally registered vehicle which was subsequently impounded by police.

At the same time five local nationals were also arrested at British Lines Road for knowingly being concerned with the unlawful exportation of tobacco.

In connection with the same operation a further three Spanish nationals were also arrested at Winston Churchill Avenue as they attempted to dispose of evidence in connection with the unlawful transportation and exportation of tobacco.

A search warrant was subsequently executed at a commercial premise at Eastern Beach and a total of 44 boxes of tobacco were seized.

During the course of the search, 20 lighter/flick knives were also found and seized, the said knives being a prohibited import and offensive weapons.

All persons arrested were later bailed out pending further investigation.”
