Sacked Arsonist owns up

A UK national who owned up to arson of his former boss’ van that resulted in damage to two other vehicles appeared in court yesterday.

Andrew McClements was fired in April 2003 and subsequently after drinking alcohol he set the company van loaded with furniture ablaze. He left the scene and the fire brigade later concluded this had been an accidental fire, but 18 months later McClements turned himself in to the Royal Gibraltar Police after pangs of guilt.

The judge Anthony Dudley recognised that the only evidence against him was his own word and this along with the guilty plea was recognised as being to the defendant’s credit.

McClements is due a psychiatric report before sentencing, a standard procedure in such cases.
