Major Philatelic Exhibition - PhilExpo '05

A philatelic exhibition organized by the Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau, PHILEXPO ’05, will be staged in Gibraltar next week.

The exhibition will open to the public on Tuesday at the Casemates Exhibition rooms from until Saturday 16 April.

“This exhibition follows and builds on the undoubted success of the Tercentenary Stamp Exhibition, which was held in April last year,” commented Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau director Glendon Martinez, who said the Bureau had been instrumental in mounting this exhibition, with the particular assistance of Stephen Vinales.

The Philexpo ‘05 exhibition will be divided into three sections: stamp displays, a philatelic shop and phonecard displays.

The stamp displays will include collections prepared specially for this exhibition by Gibraltar philatelists. Seasoned Gibraltar collectors like Richard Garcia and Stephen Vinales will be joined by collectors who are new to exhibiting, including Freddy Becerra and Orlando Bossino. They will be exhibiting side by side with seven Spanish philatelists from La Linea and Algeciras who have been invited to display philatelic material.

The stamps on display will cover a wide range: there will be traditional collections and thematic collections, there will be Gibraltar stamps of the reign of Queen Victoria, varieties on Gibraltar stamps, a display on postal relations between Gibraltar and Spain, Naval covers, stamps featuring Princess Diana, and a wide variety of collections on different themes, and much more.

But the centrepiece of the philatelic displays is expected to be a sizeable display of material provided by the Gibraltar Post Office, featuring many Gibraltar issues of the last 40 years, in particular sets of stamps designed by the late Freddy Ryman. He was the first Gibraltarian to design commemorative stamps for Gibraltar. The original artwork for a number of stamp issues will be displayed alongside printer’s proof material. The Post Office display has been mounted for this exhibition by Stephen Vinales.

During the course of the event, the Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau will man a philatelic counter at the Casemates exhibition rooms. Collectors will be able to buy the range of philatelic issues that are presently on sale. In addition, a special postmark has been prepared by the Bureau to commemorate the exhibition, and this will be obtainable at the exhibition.

The stamp collections will be complemented by a display of phonecards by Francis Molinary, James Mascarenhas and Celio Alvarez. It is the first time that a joint philatelic exhibition and display of phonecards is being held.

The exhibition and the philatelic counter at Casemates will open to the general public from 10 to 7pm throughout the week as from Tuesday, and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome.
