Edinburgh Estate to be known by local names

From Jacobo Azagury to Willie Thompson

A ceremony will take place at the main entrance to the Edinburgh Estate at noon today to commemorate the naming of the former military accommodation that now houses Gibraltarians. Formerly numbered, the blocks will bear the names of well know local citizens.

A special plaque will be unveiled by the Jaime Netto, Minister for Housing, followed by a reception being held at the City Hall for the families of the persons being celebrated. Some of the guests will be arriving from abroad.

The naming of the blocks has been the result of the Edinburgh Estate Tenants' Association having approached Mr Netto for this to be considered by the Government.
The blocks are being named after people from different backgrounds and professions though essentially, they all share one common theme in that they have made important contributions to the Gibraltar community, a spokesman explained.

"The Government is proud to unfold these names, fully recognises, and above all, values their important achievements to local life and history," said Mr Netto.

There are no plans to change the numbering of flats and tenants of the Edinburgh Estate will be given full details of the names, relevant to their blocks.

Government also said that the proposed Senior Citizens' building at the 'Sands' plot will be named 'Albert Risso House' in recognition of his enormous contribution to public life, details of which will be given at a later date.

The names of the blocks at the Edinburgh Estate will be as follows:

B 1 - 12/73 - 76 William Gomez House
C 61 - 72 Joseph Noguera House

I visited Edinburgh Estate complex in June 2015. Reason being my mum and dad lived there in 1964 while dad served in the Navy there. I was born in the then naval hospital in Dec 1964 and left Gib in 1965 shortly after my sister was born in October. I had always wanted to visit my birthplace and finally did so last year, address on my birth certificate was 77 Edinburgh House to which I sent a letter and long story short the lovely couple there John and Joan Ramagge wrote back to me with the new title and in July 2015 myself and partner met these lovely people who let me into their home and take photos of where I started my lifes journey. I fell in love with Gib and have stayed in regular contact with John and Joan hoping to revisit them this summer. Amanda Lyttle from Belfast Northern Ireland
