"We must be extremely wary of implications for Gibraltar" says Feetham

New EU constitution

Labour Leader Daniel Feetham has said that Dr Dennis MacShane’s remarks on the effect of the EU Constitutional treaty on Gibraltar’s police and judicial affairs may give “the misleading impression” that Gibraltar’s position in respect of police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters would remain as they are now, if and when the Constitution is adopted.

Mr Feetham said that once it was up and running measures may be taken in future under the new Constitutional powers which “might impact adversely on Gibraltar’s constabulary, local government powers and armed forces facilities.” He said in what way EU measures would affect Gibraltar was not known, since neither the UK “and still less Gibraltar would have a veto over such measures, which could distinguish between Gibraltar and UK.”
